yum yum eat ’em up

When I think of a sweet potato I think of buttery/marshmallowy sweet potatos that my grandma used to make for Thanksgiving. Sounds great but I hated them as a kid and only recently tried them again. When sweet potato fries became popular I tried them and loved them….I know, not the healthiest. That was my gateway though. My gateway into one of the best things I have eaten in a long time that I made myself. I am of course talking about a loaded taco sweet potato. You can really put whatever you want on it but I usually put homemade guacamole, salsa, ground turkey with taco seasoning and I used to put on greek yogurt but have stopped doing that since I am avoiding dairy. Let me know if you think of any other creative combinations since this has become a weekly meal for Zacky and I.

PS. The picture does not do it justice. I know it looks like a big old blob but it is actually really good.

I know its kind of a long playlist but since my runs are generally around 90 minutes now I like to make sure I have plenty of music to listen to. There is nothing worse than bad music on a long run.

Something has been missing…….

Since spring has decided to hold off for awhile it has been a lot harder to get motivated on the weekends to get to the gym. Luckily, I have boot camp on Saturday mornings. As for Sunday it has been a little trickier. Last week I did a quick crossfit inspired workout and went for a short run. Today I was dreading my 90 minute run on the treadmill and felt like I needed more of a stretch than a long run. I opted for a yoga video online. It was 18 minutes but holy buckets!

I used to do yoga pretty regularly, at least once a week and actually considered myself pretty good at it. Since I have been doing more lifting and running I have put yoga on the back burner but decided to try it again today. It is definitely something that has been missing from my normal workouts. I realized how tight my quads and hamstrings are and how my flexibility has definitely gone downhill. I’m sure I looked a little awkward and thank my husband for being non-judgmental!

Do any of you practice yoga regularly? How often and what kind?

PS I was pretty pumped to see today that I am up to 10 followers. I know it doesnt sound like a lot but hey you have to start somewhere!

Get it Girl!

I never thought that I would get to a point where it was easy for me to think of things to do at the gym as far as strength training go.  I LOVE strength training but the only thing holding me back was not knowing what the heck to do! I was also intimidated by all of the different machines and weights and figured I would look like an idiot if I just sat there trying to work each machine. I would highly recommend meeting with a trainer or taking some kind of class in order to become more comfortable with the machines and weight training. I typically have just been running at the gym since it really requires little thought, But, since I am making an effort to do more strength training I want to do things that I enjoy but I also don’t want to have to think to much about what I will do next. So,with a little help from my friend Ashley I was able to come up with a great fully body workout to do at the gym.

I am not a personal trainer so just remember to do any of the exercises at your level. Also, I don’t know all of the “technical” names for each move so if you have a question of what something might be please let me know.

The only equipment you will need is a TRX Strap, Resistance band, BOSU, and a dumbbell

Do each exercise for 1 minute and repeat 2-3x

Pistol Squat

TRX Rows

Hamstring Curls-With feet in the trx straps

Lat Pulldowns with resistance bands

Resistance band side step

Tricep Extension while standing on the BOSU (I did it with the dome side facing down but you can do it with the flat side facing down)

Body weight squats (I also did these on the BOSU)

In between each exercise do 5 burpees.

After going through this routine 3 times I did a quick ab Tabata which was Russian twists and forearms planks.

I have been doing a lot more weight/strength training and I really like to do things that I can do with just my own body weight. Please feel free to comment on this post if you have any suggestions or ideas of things that could be added or if you have a question about how to do one of these exercises.

It was like drinking puke……..24 day challenge

I have talked about the 24 day challenge that I started on March 25th and now I am finally going to tell you all about it. I learned about the 24 day challenge from my good friend Ashley who is an Advocare representative. She had seen me struggle with my weight loss plateau and finally convinced me in March that this might be the answer for me.

We came up with a plan and I ordered everything that I needed. I got the herbal cleanse and the MNS3. The first 10 days consists of a fiber drink, probiotic, and herbal cleanse. You are also able to eat fruits, vegetables, lean meats, nuts, and some whole grains.

Some people might think wow that is really limiting but if you really think about it that is what you should be eating anyway! Not like I am one to talk since I have basically spent most of my adult life trying to break my bad eating habits.

The worst part about this challenge is the fiber drink that you take in the morning. I compare it to drinking puke. The best method is to just mix it and slam it. So you just get it done and over with.

I am really proud to say that I have not cheated at all and I am on day 15! I feel like it just keeps getting easier and easier! The best part is that I have SO much energy. I really like the supplements and vitamins that come with it and will continue to take some of them after I am done. GO ME!

Has anyone else done a challenge like this? How did it go? What kind of supplements have people found that they love?

2013-A new beginning

Like many people I made the resolution to lose weight this year. I have done this many times but for some reason this year I really meant it. I am ready to make a change in how I live my life. Rather than put a weight goal on my “resolution,” I decided to just simply live and eat healthier.

I have posted before that last year I ran a half marathon. I think that some people look at me and think, how did this girl ever run 13.1 miles? I did! It was a slow and sometimes painful 13.1 miles but I did it. This year I want people to look at me and have no doubt that I could do it.

My first step towards my goal for the year was to join a gym. I had been a member of a smaller chain that I know was not where I needed to be. They had pizza Tuesdays….really?

I joined a larger chain and have enjoyed every moment. I started out trying a bootcamp class for the first month and loved it but unfortunately was not able to keep at that. Instead I have done my own thing but have learned a lot from the helpful people there. I also started out the year by trying to do the South Beach diet. I LOVE carbs but really needed to cut back on them and this was my solution. I will just say that I was not able to stick with that because I didn’t feel like I had support and now looking back I do not think that my head was in the right place.

Below are a few pictures from January 3rd. I apologize for the blurriness and promise that the next ones will be much better!

The beginning

Ever since I turned 27 I have really had to work hard to maintain or lose weight. I have found that I can’t eat anything that I want anymore like when I was in high school. My most recent frustration came last year when I tried for over 6 months to lose weight before my wedding. I didn’t get to the weight that I had hoped and on August 4th I walked down the aisle at one of my heaviest weights ever. After that, I decided I needed to change something and really began to focus on losing weight and eating healthier. For the first few months I worked out but continued to eat what I thought was healthy. Lots of pasta but with olive oil instead of creamy sauces, and lots of fruit.

In August I joined a new gym and met with a trainer. I explained that I had run a half marathon in June that past summer and I wanted to do another one this year but improve my time. He then told me that I trained all wrong. I ran and did minimal weight/resistance training. I have now started to change my ways and have done more weight lifting and resistance training but it is still hard for me to think that I will be able to run a half marathon in two months if I don’t run at all.

I am now doing a 24 day challenge, and will post more on that later. I am also still running but have tried incorporating more weight training in with it. My half marathon is on June 2nd and I feel ready but still have plenty of training to do.

As for the pictures and wedding dress from last August. My goal now is to have people look at those pictures and see how far I have come. I also want to spend my 1 year anniversary in my wedding dress that last year fit me perfectly but this year will be too big for me!
